A more considered way to explore the distance between airports.
i Feasible geographic estimate using a 1° grid and your selected regions. Actual flight tracks vary. Method & data ↗
Airpath estimates a feasible distance around the geographic exclusions you choose, and compares it with the great-circle baseline.
Type city names, IATA codes or ICAO codes. City names use city-centre coordinates. Chain stops with “to” or hyphens, and compare routes with commas. Select a suggestion when a name is ambiguous.

Choose countries, browse published China airspace, use dated advisory presets, select terrain regions, or draw and import your own polygons. China boundaries are visible by default; only areas you select affect routing.
A range shows the approximate area reachable within a distance budget while routing around exclusions.

5500km@JFK,2000mi@SFO
This is an exclusion-aware geographic estimate, not a prediction of an actual flown track. It cannot establish the minimum operationally possible flight distance.
Distances use a spherical Earth with a mean radius of 3,440.065 nm. An A* search follows a 1° global grid with diagonal connections. Great-circle shortcuts are checked against excluded polygons and the selected boundary buffer. The result is a feasible approximation; grid resolution can overestimate a detour or miss a narrow passage.
Ranges use distance-budget reachability on the same grid, with direct visibility checks. Their outlines are approximate at 1° resolution. An unobstructed range is shown as a geodesic circle.
Countries use simplified Natural Earth land polygons plus the chosen buffer. These are proxies for sovereign airspace, not authoritative territorial-sea or FIR boundaries. Terrain outlines are schematic preferences, not declarations that a region is inaccessible. No aircraft performance or terrain-elevation model is applied.
The EASA preset list was checked on 27 October 2026 and is not a live feed. Presets conservatively exclude the whole named country (or a schematic Gulf region), even when an advisory applies only to specific provinces, altitudes, FIRs, or operators. They do not reproduce the full advisory boundaries, exceptions, or legal applicability. Read the linked bulletin before drawing operational conclusions.
Actual routing also depends on airways, flight permissions, current NOTAMs, weather, winds, ATC, departure and arrival procedures, aircraft performance, diversion options, and operator policies. These are not modeled here.
City names resolve to GeoNames populated-place coordinates, not an airport serving that city. The bundled gazetteer includes cities with populations over 15,000 plus capitals. Ambiguous names show a choice; select a region/country or use bracketed qualifiers. Use “to” or quotation marks for hyphenated city names.
The China layer reproduces 48 published P/R/D footprints from an archived CAAC AIP: printed 15 May 2022, effective 15 June 2022 at 1600 UTC. It comes from a flight-simulation mirror and has not been checked against current AIP amendments or NOTAMs. It is not a complete military airspace map. Altitudes, schedules, NOTAM activation and civil-flight exemptions are shown as published. Selecting an area applies a two-dimensional exclusion at all altitudes and times, including your boundary buffer. Showing a boundary alone does not block it.
Browse 1 prohibited, 36 restricted and 11 danger areas from CAAC AIP ENR 5.1, effective 15 June 2022. This archived mirror does not show all military-controlled airspace or current NOTAMs. Read the source ↗
Military-control percentages are management statistics, not geographic no-fly boundaries. Historical background (2014) ↗. For exploration only; current operational access requires current authoritative publications and permissions.
